Chichester College
West Sussex County Council benefits from secure, adjustable, and efficient window installation.
Situation
The new STEM and Higher Education building at Chichester College required the installation of high-performance Kawneer AA720 windows by specialist glazing contractor Leay Ltd. The façade design called for these units to be installed in a cantilevered position within a double-skinned wall build-up, creating significant demands on the fixing method. The installation needed to minimise cold bridging at the structural connection while ensuring the brackets could safely carry the load and maintain precise alignment over long window runs.
With a tight programme and limited scope for onsite fabrication, a consistent, engineered and fully traceable solution was required to support both performance and programme delivery.
Solution
To meet the structural, thermal and programme requirements of the project, SFS supplied the JB-D Plus pre-wall window installation bracket system. Its engineered design provided a reliable fixing method for the cantilevered installation detail while helping to limit cold bridging at the structural connection, supporting the overall thermal performance of the façade.
The system delivered a consistent, load-tested approach that reduced onsite work and ensured accurate alignment across long elevations.
Key benefits included
- Precise adjustment on site
- Proven load-bearing values in light-gauge steel frame in accordance with IFT MO/02-1
- Rapid installation without the need for complex subframe build-ups
- Reduced thermal bridging at connection points, supporting overall façade performance
- Full structural performance with fewer components
- Adjustable brackets that contributed to faster progress on site, allowing installers to respond to as-built conditions without delay or additional fabrication
Result
By using the JB-D® Plus system, Leay Ltd were able to deliver the window and curtain walling installation quickly and accurately, supporting the programme on a fast-moving education build. The bracket system helped to minimise cold bridging at the connection detail and provided the adjustment required to maintain alignment across long window runs—without the traditional reliance on loose packers or fabricated steel plates.
The engineered fixing method also enabled exterior cladding works to progress in parallel, allowing internal fit-out to continue in weathertight conditions. The result is a robust, secure and thermally considerate installation, with SFS technology contributing to a smoother build sequence, reduced on-site complexity and long-term performance for the new STEM facility.
