The importance of pull-out Testing

Fixings play a crucial role in the safety and longevity of building envelope systems. Our onsite pull-out testing service allows project teams to verify the suitability and performance of fixings under real conditions, across a variety of substrates including masonry, concrete, and steel.

Pull-out tests help confirm whether fixings meet design expectations, manufacturer guidance, or the requirements of third-party test reports. These tests also offer vital data for bespoke applications where standard calculations may not be sufficient.

Whatโ€™s involved in a pull-out test?

Our technicians carry out pull-out tests onsite using calibrated hydraulic equipment. Fixings are installed in the target substrate and loaded in tension until defined load or displacement limits are reached. Results are recorded and analysed in line with BS 8539 and CFA guidance.

Test outputs include:

  • Maximum load capacity (kN)
  • Value range lowest to highest
  • Mean values based on a selective range

When is pull-out testing required?

Pull-out tests may be recommended in situations where fixing performance needs to be verified against the onsite substrate.

Scenarios include:

  • Installing fixings into unknown, variable, or mixed substrate types
  • Heritage or existing buildings where material properties are uncertain or inconsistent
  • Faรงade systems, rainscreen cladding, or other safety-critical applications where site verification can help confirm suitability

Supporting safe design and compliance

The data from pull-out tests can be used by specifiers, engineers, or faรงade contractors to:

  • Validate design assumptions or changes
  • Assess fixing suitability for the given substrate
  • Select alternative fasteners or installation methods
  • Demonstrate due diligence and regulatory compliance

We work in close collaboration with your project team to ensure a smooth testing process throughout all stages of your project.
